Tips & Hints

Some tips to making your home garden look fit for a magazine.

Whether you’re building a new house from scratch or if you’re ready to give your current home a fresh new look, here’s some help to help you understand what you need to do and when.

For new homes, it’s important to have a separate budget to that of your building.

More often than not, the cost of building eats into your landscaping budget and you’re left with an incomplete section. If you talk with your landscaping consultant and get an idea of budget early then you’ll be able to have enough left over to complete the look of your home and invite your friends and family over to see the finished look.

Create your own scrap-book of ideas of what you like.

If you do this, it’ll help you to convey to your landscaper what look you want to go for, and what plants and features you like. They’ll then be able to consult with you about which plants will suit your climate and create the garden you’l love and have always wanted.

The process explained: Irrigation, garden then lawn and how to look after it.

Once you have a budget set you’ll be able to plan whether you want irrigation or not. Irrigation can be expensive but can really help you maintain your watering easily. Irrigation needs to go down first, then the garden is established. Lastly, lawn is laid or sown (if a new development) and then all you have to do is look after it! You can also do this in stages if you want to help spread out the cost, instead of doing it all at once.

5 tips to give you the BEST LAWN ON THE BLOCK!

To make the most out of the space available at your property, highlighting your landscaping with a rich green lawn is one of the best features you can utilise. Not only is it a great place for you family to enjoy but it can accent your house and the other elements you choose to landscape with.

1) How to mow new lawns to get them to last

Allow a brand new lawn to grow well before its first cut. It needs a well developed leaf to continue strong growth. When time comes to mow again, a good majority of the leaf needs to remain so make sure the mower cuts high enough. And always remove the lawn clippings and any old dead material that is left on the lawn floor to allow air movement.

2) How to make the most of established lawns

Though the close cut lawn looks good, you should still never cut too low. The grass leaf is needed to catch sunlight and moisture to keep a healthy plant so make sure to leave about 2.5 cm and cool season grasses to 4 cm. Though it’s not the most fun chore, try to mow as soon as the lawn is ready so you take as little of the leaf as possible.

3) Why fertilising your lawn is important

During the growing season, cool or warm depending on your grass type, frequent fertilising is the best for your lawn. Though occasional, heavy fertilising is better than none at all, it is not as effective. The type of fertiliser is important also. Nitrogen heavy fertilisers are not suitable – a high mineral organic lawn food is your best option.

4) Why you should water your lawn

The best time to water your lawn is in the morning rather than the evening. It gives the lawn time to drink during the warm part of the day. Unlike fertilising, it is better to give the lawn high volume, occasional waterings rather than frequent, light waterings.

5) How to select the right grass

There are a number of grasses that you can choose from. They all have different attributes and perform best in different climates and soils. It is also important how much sun your property sees as all grass enjoys sunlight. To find out more about grass selection contact us. Seasonal tips

The start of spring is the time to prep lawns before summer. This means fertilising and all moss and broad leaf should be sprayed out by mid-October.
